The Rev. Canon Darrow K. Aiona 1935 – 2012

A Message from Bishop Fitzpatrick

It is with deep sadness that I must inform the Diocese that the Reverend Canon Darrow Kanakanui Aiona (age 77) died of heart failure last night, Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012.  A child of Hawai`i and an `Iolani School graduate, Canon Aiona was ordained a Priest by Bishop Harry Kennedy on Dec. 1, 1963.  In addition to ministry in New Zealand and New York City, Canon Aiona served in this Diocese as the Vicar of St. John’s by the Sea Church (1971-1986), Vicar of Waikiki Chapel (1986-1996), and Rector of St. Mark’s Church (1997-2007).  He was an emeritus member of the faculty of Leeward Community College, had served as an elected member of the State Board of Education and had served on the Board of Queen’s Hospital.  I named him an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of St. Andrew (filling the Hanchett Chair) in 2007.  A beloved Priest of the Diocese and one of the few Native Hawaiians ordained for ministry in our Church, he will be sorely missed.

His widow, Teena Urban, is currently making the needed arrangements and we will share the details as they become available.  Please remember Teena in your prayers.

In Prayer for Canon Aiona

O God, who hast made thy servant Darrow Kanakanui Aiona to flourish among the Ministers of Apostolic Succession in the honorable office of a Priest:  grant, we beseech thee, that he may also be joined with them in perpetual fellowship.  Through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.  May he rest in peace. Amen.
