We are incredibly grateful to Leohone and John for agreeing to serve as organist and choir directors for at least six months following the departure of Music Director Todd Beckham. Following is a brief introduction to these two, although both have been with us off and on for many years.
Artist and musician, Leohone holds a Master of Arts degree from Norwich University in Vermont and a Fellowship degree in Organ Performance from Trinity College of Music, London, England. From 1982 onwards, she performed organ recitals extensively across Canada and the Western U.S. until she retired from the concert scene to Hawai‘i in 1989. Once settled, she inevitably found her way back to her first love and has answered her call to paint. Her fascinating and evocative paintings are hung in fine art galleries throughout the islands and the corridor of the Cathedral’s Memorial Building.
Leohone is the hanai daughter of Paulie Keakealani Jennings. She was John McCreary’s Assistant Organist from 1993-1996, during which time she collaborated with Malcolm Nāea Chun in setting over 50 anthems in Hawaiian for the Hawaiian Choir, and was Organist/Choirmaster at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for 15 years. Leohone will be responsible for selecting all music and directing the Hawaiian Choir. She and John will share responsibility for the 10:30 choir. We are incredibly grateful to her for stepping in for us at this time.
John Starr Alexander
John Alexander has taught choral music at ‘Iolani School since 1982; for his first 10 years there, he team-taught with Canon John McCreary, who served as organist-choirmaster of St. Andrew’s Cathedral for 35 years, in addition to a 22-year stint as choral director and a 27-year gig as organist at ‘Iolani School.
John was a member of the St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir from 1983 to 2008, singing under the direction of John McCreary, Dr. Arlan Sunnarborg and John Renke. After a short hiatus, John returned to the Cathedral and has sung under the direction of Todd Beckham for both the 8:00 and 10:30 services during Todd’s tenure at the Cathedral. Although he is very sad to see Todd and Jennifer depart, John is happy to be able to serve as part of the interim team, together with Leohone Magno, until a permanent replacement can be found.
