Message from Fr. Moki, April 1, 2020

Dear Cathedral Ohana:

Once again, I am writing to you from my apartment at the Honolulu Tower where I’ve been sequestered since we’ve all been told to shelter in place. I’m grateful that we are allowed to go out for exercise, because that gives me the opportunity to walk down to the Cathedral grounds every day to check on things and make sure that everything is in order. We now have 24-hour security and we will keep that in place for the duration of the shelter-in-place order. Having said that, as I mentioned in one of my sermons, someone broke into the choir room (see photo, right) and we are working to make that room more secure.

Many of you have been participating in our virtual worship at 9:00 on weekday mornings and 10:00 on Sunday mornings. This has been a wonderful experience for me and I am feeling very connected to all of you, which is important to my navigating this pandemic. I need my faith community. I’m glad that you have been there for me and that I can be there for you. I want to especially thank Dixie for being my technician, Lauren for preparing the bulletins every day, Leohone for the beautiful musical offerings, and all of those who have stepped up to do video recordings of their readings. What is also really wonderful about this virtual worship experiences that we are connecting with people are neighbor islands, California, South Carolina, and other points beyond. I saw wonderful meme on Facebook the other day that said: the church isn’t shut down; it’s been deployed.

Please know that in the midst of this pandemic, the Cathedral staff are all working from home. Fr. Keleawe is taking care of pastoral care, Lauren is preparing bulletins and doing mailings, Liane is ensuring the security of the grounds and premises, Julia is taking care of accounting matters, Leohone is preparing music for worship every day, and Casey continues to work with the security guards, checking in with them on a regular basis. Thank you all for continuing your contributions to the Cathedral to ensure it’s smooth running during this pandemic. Please know that you can continue to give online and/or mail contributions in. We have a procedure to ensure checks are deposited on a timely basis.

We do have a schedule for Holy Week, which will all be done via virtual worship on Facebook live:
