Evensong Honoring Tikhon, Patriarch of Russia, Confessor and Ecumenist

St. Tikhon (Тихон Московский) was a Patriarch of Russia, Confessor, and Ecumenist. A Russian Orthodox Priest, he was assigned to work in America in 1898. He participated in many ecumenical events with other denominations, particularly the Episcopal Church. He was held in such esteem that he was made an honorary citizen of the United States. Tikhon later established warm relations with the Diocese of California. He returned to Russia in 1907, and died there in 1925.

The Cathedral will celebrate this little-known saint with a Choral Evensong on April 7 at 5:30 pm, with the Cathedral Choir and Choral Scholars.

2019 Schedule of Ali‘i Sundays and Evensongs released

The Cathedral has released its schedule of Ali‘i Sunday services and Evensongs.

The Ali‘i Sundays honor members of the royal family of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, with particular emphasis on King Kamehamena IV and Queen Emma, as they were the founders of this Cathedral. They donated the land on which it stands, and Queen Emma personally supervised the building of the Cathedral edifice. On each of the Ali‘i Sundays the Hawaiian Royal Societies and other ahahui (Hawaiian clubs) join us for the 8:00 am Hawaiian service, and the front pews are reserved for them. A special reception follows. Their processions in and out add an extra note of pageantry to the Hawaiian service.

Choral Evensong remembering Queen Lili‘uokalani, who died Nov. 11, 1917

This Choral Evensong, November 11, 2018 at 5:30 pm in the Cathedral, commemorates the death of our beloved Queen Lili’uokalani, Nov. 11, 1917. It will feature the Cathedral Choir with special guests, the Nā Wai Chamber Choir, with music by Queen Lili’uokalani, the Hawaiian setting for Evensong by John McCreary, and an anthem by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Established in 2009, Nā Wai is a women’s vocal ensemble that celebrates the works of women, preserves and propagates Native Hawaiian music, and champions repertoire for treble voices. Their singers are an incredible group of women who gather together to empower, inspire, and thrive through the highest level of artistry. Hear some music from their recent album!
