Aloha, Grace and Peace, Cathedral ‘ohana~
Many of you are familiar with the prayer resources shared by the Forward Movement publishing company. The Forward Day by Day booklets are ubiquitous in the entryways of many Episcopal Churches (though not in our current COVID-tide). Easy to carry in your pocket, or keep on your nightstand, the small booklet holds within it prayers and a reflection for each and every day of a season / series of months. Deeply rooted in the tradition and fabric of the Church, Forward Movement, born out of the Great Depression, continues to serve the Church as a witness to the power of prayer and the continual, dailiness of our discipleship as we walk the Way of Love.

Forward Movement: inspire disciples, empower evangelistsI write today to share not only this wonderful resource with you again – please do take a moment to peruse their website – but to spread the word about a new opportunity for reflection and formation offered by Forward Movement, aligning with the upcoming election on November 3. Called “A Season of Prayer for an Election,” Forward Movement has created a novena of prayer and reflections for the nine days prior to election day, calling us all to deep contemplation and devotion at a time when our nation is so deeply divided. (A novena, from the Latin root of the word for ‘nine,’ is an ancient church pattern of prayer, either done publicly or privately. In some cases the novena lasts for a series of nine days, in others it may be nine weeks. Some Biblical authorities hold that the first novena occurred in the Upper Room, in the nine days between the ascension of Jesus and the Day of Pentecost.)

Forward Movement shares this about “A Season of Prayer for an Election”:
“We come together, asking God for courage and wisdom, thanking God for love and joy. As we move toward the election of leaders for the United States, may we all join in a season of prayer, committing to offer to God our fears and frustrations, our hopes and dreams.”

I thoroughly commend this resource to you – if you follow this link to “A Season of Prayer for an Election”, you will be able to sign up for the daily prayers and reflections to be sent directly to you through your email, or you can access the same devotional through Forward Movement’s Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, with #seasonforprayer. I am also working on a way to share an aspect of the novena each of the nine days, live, on the Cathedral’s Facebook page.

So, please consider joining with me, and thousands of others, in this novena before the election, this #seasonofprayer, and together let us enter this time with a ready prayer on our hearts and in our pockets, and the Way of Love firmly under our feet.

With aloha,

For an Election (BCP p.822)
Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States, and of this community, in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
