Message from Fr. Moki April 5, 2017

Dear Cathedral Ohana:

The Fifth Sunday in Lent has come and gone and we had 228 people in attendance at five services over the weekend, which is a good indication of vibrancy and vitality in our congregation and parish.  For me personally, it just feels so good and so right to be back at the Cathedral and worshipping with all of you.  And as we move into Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter; I feel very, very blessed.

Palm Sunday
This coming Sunday we mark Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.  Please be aware that the flow of the 8:00 and 10:30 services will be a bit different from what we’re used to.  After the Liturgy of the Palms and the reading of the Epistle, we will have a sequence hymn and then go directly to the Prayers of the People.  Then after receiving communion we will sing a closing hymn and then take in an interpretation of the Passion Gospel.  After that final reading is over, I will give the Dismissal and ask the congregation to depart the sanctuary in silence.  This will be different and I thank you in advance for your willingness to try something new.  Mahalo!

Holy Week and Easter
We have a full schedule of Holy Week worship offerings next week and the Bishop will be with us at the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening as well as Easter Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30.  The Altar Guild will work to create a garden in the ambulatory for prayer and reflection after the Maundy Thursday service and it will be available to you all until 9:00PM on Thursday evening, after which we will have the security guard come in and close the building for the night.

The schedule of services for Holy Week is:

  • 7:00AM Rite I said service
  • 8:00AM Rite II Hawaiian language service
  • 10:30AM Rite II sung service

Worship Committee
Please know that your worship committee has worked diligently to provide the community with meaningful worship services for Holy Week and Easter and I appreciate not only their hard work, but also their spirit of cooperation and wonderful sense of humor.

Need for Crucifers:  When we met last night, we identified a need for crucifers to serve, especially at 10:30 Sunday services.  If you feel called to this ministry, please let me know.

Closing Thoughts
In the midst of preparations for Holy Week, life goes on at the Cathedral.  We have meetings, worship, events to host, and the like.  I still, however, start every morning at the Cathedral in my office where I close the door and spend half an hour in prayer and meditation.  It helps me to remember why we’re here and why we do what we do.  We’re here to worship and give glory to God and as we approach Holy Week and Easter, I encourage each and every one of us to take time to reflect, pray, meditate and feel the presence of God in our midst.

Until I see you all at worship this weekend, please take care.
