Featuring the public premiere of a choral commission honoring President Barack Obama
Lehigh University Choral Arts ensembles will tour Oahu May 9-18 under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Steven Sametz and Associate Conductor Sun Min Lee.
“The tour started with a commission for a new work for Punahou School. I was very honored to receive this commission from Robert Dupire-Nelson whose children sing in the Punahou HS Chorale. It was Bob’s idea to honor President Obama, one of the illustrious alums of Punahou.” The new work is named after the ancient 2000-line Hawaiian chant (Oli), Kumulipo, from which Sametz drew his text describing the creation of night.
The new work will receive its premier performance on the school campus May 2 sung by the Punahou HS Chorale under the direction of Michael Lippert. The public premiere is scheduled Saturday, May 11, 5:30 PM, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, sung by the combined forces of Punahou Chorale, Lutheran Church of Honolulu and the Lehigh University Choral Arts under Sametz’s direction. The Punahou Chorale will meet with Dr. Semetz in a composer’s forum in preparation for this event.
The program at St. Andrew’s will include Sametz’s Magnificat for chorus and organ featuring John Renke, organist. Lehigh Choral Arts will be joined by the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir prepared by Dr. Miguel Felipe. Lehigh Choir will present a varied program with excerpts of Paul Hindemith’s Six Chanson, Eric Whitacre’s Lux Arumque, excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s Five Flower Songs, and Renaissance works of Palestrina and Lasso. On the lighter side, there will be barbershop works sung by the Glee Club, and an audience-pleasing arrangement of Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies, created for Lehigh Choral Arts by Sametz.
Lehigh Choral Arts ensembles include the undergraduate University Choir, a men’s Glee Club, a women’s ensemble Dolce and members of the community-based Choral Union. Singers from ages 17 to 70 participate in this world-class choral program.
The Glee Club will perform Sunday, May 12 as part of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu 10:30 am worship service and Dolce, the women’s ensemble will perform at the evensong service that day at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, 5:30 pm
