St. Andrew’s Cathedral will host a day-long tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 21, 2013–the national holiday honoring Dr. King. The day begins at 9 am with readings from King’s writings and speeches. Participants will include people from the Cathedral and wider Honolulu community.
“I wanted to create a way for Dr. King’s own words to re-enter our consciousness and continue to form us today,” explained the Very Rev. Walter Brownridge, Dean of the Cathedral.
The combined Cathedral Choirs will perform spirituals at the 12.15 pm celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Dean Brownridge will preach. The service will be followed by the afternoon readings of more of Dr. King’s writings starting at 1 pm.
At 5 pm, soprano Georgine Stark will perform a half-hour recital of spirituals, followed by concluding prayers at 5.30 pm, and the singing of “My country ’tis of thee”!
The public is invited to come and go during the day as time permits. Parking is free during the programs and services.
